Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
Course Description
This course will focus on students gaining an understanding of basic modern dance movement material and modern dance terminology. Technical ability, individual expression, connectivity, and performance quality are emphasized. Students will also learn and continue to pursue the fundamental principles of alignment, dynamics, rhythmic phrasing and improvisation. Additionally students will learn basic anatomy and kinesiology and choreographic elements.

Make-up Assignments: If a student is absent from class they can complete a make-up assignment to earn participation points. Choose an article from the NY Times Dance section and write a one page summary of the article concluding with a paragraph about what you learned and how it applies to your dance education. Use the link to NY Times website. Must submit through the form below using the Make-Up Assignment Fact Sheet.

Technique Class Assessment: Students are evaluated twice a quarter on their technical ability. The first evaluation is just before mid-term and then the second re-evaluation occurs before the end of the marking period resulting in one Technique Assessment Grade per quarter. Rubric is below. *Please note this is different than the Departmental Dance Assessments
Movement Exams: Students will be evaluated on set sequences they have been working on in class. Anatomy: Students will complete anatomy coloring packets to identify bones, joints and muscles in the human body. |

Journal: Students will keep a weekly modern dance journal. Students will take notes at the end of each class and then submit a Journal Entry each week. Journal Entries are due by 7:00 am Monday morning from the previous week. Journals are due once a week through the "Weekly Journal Entry" tab. The "Quote of the week" document now includes 2nd Quarter.

Assignment #1 Click the link for Assignment #1. Read the article. Write a one-paragraph summary of the article. Then describe in a second paragraph how the information in the article relates to what you have been working on in Modern I. DUE Friday, August 28th submit through this website using the form below. Assignment #2 Click the link for Assignment #2. Read the article. Write a one-paragraph summary of the article. In a second paragraph identify what you believe to be your personal strengths and weaknesses regarding the information presented in the article. Finally, in a third paragraphs talk about how the information in the article relates to your preparation for the upcoming Fall Dance Concert. DUE Friday, October 23rd submit through this website using the form below. Assignment #3 Working in assigned groups, create a 10 minute warm-up based on the readings from "The Dance Bible". Be prepared to turn in your written warm-up and present/teach your warm-up to the class on Thursday, January 28th.
